With conditions anything but good and a shocking display of umpiring, Powelltown finished just too strongly for Woori Yallock.
The game could quite easily have finished in an all-in "blue" but for the captains intervening when the atmosphere was really tense. Boots were flying and blows looked like being handed out, but tempers cooled just in time. Ken Paul, at centre halfback, played brilliantly all day, and would get my vote as the Tigers' best. Basil Ockwell, at full back, defended with great dash.
Bill Allsop and Ivan Ferguson had to work hard, as they were roving to a badly beaten ruck. Bill Smith was the only ruck man who gave them any support. Merv Long, full forward, was up against a tough opponent, but he moved out stylishly, took some nice marks, and scored. several goals. Grant Richards (two goals) gave a pocket. Woori's centre, Bill good exhibition on the forward Worlley, Tom Hutchinson and Max Burrows, were well tested, but always placed their kicks to the best advantage. Joe Leonard has regained his renowned form; those goals on the run were gems.
Harry Jacquier plays better in a position. Jim Dark and Robin McQuie were two reliable defenders. George Morris was playing soundly until hurt.
It was a blow to the Tigers when Ken Ockwell had to leave the ground in the first few minutes of play, with a leg'injury. Alan Mills moved to the forward line may do better.
So it's Warby again on Saturday, Make a special effort, boys, and'we'll give the Magpies a scare.
THE CATS. By "Spectator." In the game played at Millgrove the home team played much more confidently to amass an overwhelming score, to win by 127 points.
Millgrove's tall timber showed the lack of height and high marking ability in the Dam's line-up. Only three players in the team appeared capable of matching Max Stormer and Co. in the- air, namely, Peter Klimpck, who was definitely off color after a heavy bout of 'flu; Arthur: Dillworth, who starred in the last quarter with brilliant marking, and Bert Caneva, who, when on the ball, helped his side considerably.
My vote this week goes to Tony de Bonitatibus, who was seldom beaten on the wing and played consistently for the four quarters. Jimmy Jowsey, showing pace and guile on the other wing, gave a great fighting display against a talented player in Laurie Beckham. Playing at centre half-back, Brian Berdue showed dash and judgment to limit the opportunities of his rival. Brian Stevens, at full back, cleared well at times, but his play to position was wasted, as nobody was at home. Best of the others were D. Lushames (rover), improving each game, and R. Canavan (back pocket).
My votes this week as follows:
A. de Bonitatibus, 1; A. Dillworth, 2; J. Jowsey, 3. The club's best wishes for the future are extended to Ken Timoney and his bride, who will be married tomorrow.
