The Rathbone Engineering Bayside Bombers made it two from two on Saturday night with a assertive 40 point win over a stubborn Sandgate Hawks at Bomber Park.
With the last minute withdrawal of Mark Hudgson, Sam French (4 goals) slotted nicely into the key forward position helping the Bombers to a 2-0 start to the 2011 AFL Master season. The Bombers controlled from the first bounce with Benny Rogers and Mike Tait controlling the centre clearances driving the ball into French and Johnny Hendry (2 goals). The evergreen Carlo Archille was creating opportunities on his wing with Ada Roberts sweeping across half back the Bombers went into the main break 48 points in front.
The Bombers swung some changes at the break pushing Luke Crowe onto the ball and Simon Riley to fullback with immediate success, Crowe who leads the bombers in hard ball gets was strong in the clinches giving Steve Hazell and Rogers (2 goals) first use of the footy, But Sandgate would not die kicking 2 late goals to win the quarter to put the deficit back to 35 points at the orange break.
With the sun having gone down and the smell of the BBQ wafting across Bomber Park, the last quarter was a kick and run as Sandgate snapped two quick goals to bring a slight glimmer of hope into their efforts, only for the Bombers, with Chris Dodd snapping from Alf’s pocket to kick goal of the night, the Bombers pushed on to the final siren with two more goals to run out comfortable 40 point winners.
“ We know where we are at and where we have to be to have a successful year” assistant coach Doug Knight said after the game, “Its pleasing to see what we saw tonight as we controlled our own game plan against theirs to the fact that the scoreboard tells the storey”, “ You can win ugly and win like we did tonight, but some of it was still ugly, we will get better as the year is long”
