The Rathbone Engineering/RB Sealing Bayside Bombers made it three from three on Saturday at a wet and windy Wynnum defeating the Souths Sharks by 25 points in ordinary conditions.
The Bombers went into the game losing key forward Sam French before the game, but it was debutants Tim White and Clinton Dunning that revelled in the sloppy conditions and with Dukes Smith (4 goals) up forward the Bombers take a 3-nil win loss into their first road trip to Palm Beach next game.
The first quarter was a mud fight as both sides could not get the football anywhere near the goals and after a 20 minute slog, the Bombers held a three point lead at quarter time. Dunning and White, both off the bench along with Brad Carr and serial pest Ada Roberts were instrumental in a second quarter surge which saw the Bombers pile on 5 goals to one setting up what would become win number three for 2011. With no Russell Crowe and Dukes Smith at the other end, Big Johnny along with Bear Riley were solid across half back repelling what South’s could muster but by three quarter time is was all over as the Bombers outscored the Sharks for the quarter to take a 32 point lead.
The last was a wet a weary push to the finish line as South’s found some spring with two last quarter roll through goals only for the Bombers through a comedy of errors soccer two through out of the goal square before the bell rang signalling shower time for the victorious Bombers.
The win gives the Bombers their best start since 2005 and with Palm Beach and Redcliffe in their sights, could see their best season in AFL Masters. “We stuck to our game plan today and that’s pleasing to see in those conditions” assistant Coach Doug Knight said after the game, “Its a credit to the big blokes on a day like today, Bags and Simon rucked superbly and we have finally found a spot for Dukes”
