The McNabb Construction Bayside Bombers remain undefeated in the AFL Queensland Masters competition after a resounding 11 point win over a never say die Palm Beach at the Goldie on Sunday.
With man mountains Sully Bagnall and Big Mike Rander withdrawing on Sunday morning, it looked like the Bombers may go in a little light on height for the clash with the lions, but it was Johnny Hendry who grabbed his chance to play lone big man and controlled the air at the centre bounce tap outs to ensure the Bombers first use of the ball. Coach Mike Tait (10 clearances, 8 hard ball gets and BOG honours) and second gamer Clinton Dunning were like seagulls waiting for chips at the beach as the Bombers cut loose in the first quarter with the use of the Currumbin Creek breeze to lead by 18 points at quarter time after a four goal to one quarter.
Darren Smith, (3 goals) was providing his goal kicking prowess again after 4 goals last week, but it all or nothing for Dukes as the were either goals or landed in the carpark at right angles as his radar was either spot on or not on, and with Craig Wieland (2 goals) in support the Baysiders were able to keep the scoreboard ticking away against the breeze, be it 4 scoring shots to 7 in the second against the breeze, but still held a 10 point lead at the half time break mainly due to the efforts in defence from The Gladiator Luke Crowe and a rebounding Steve Hazel.
After the break the Bomber machine kicked into action, with Tait racking up possessions, Sam French in his second cameo for the year playing the sweeper role linking up with Timmy White and The Gambler Kenny Rogers, Smith and Wieland finished off the hard work to take a 28 point lead into the last quarter for the Bombers. The last quarter started a frantic pace and with 2 quick goals to the home side after a minute we could have game on at Palm Beach, but the Bombers settled with the evergreen Mick Kath and Carlo Archille using their experience to bring home the spoils for the Bombers for win number 4 from 4 for 2011. “Two undefeated sides on a bright sunny day, great, hard, tough football, you have to love it”, assistant coach Doug Knight said after the game, “ How about Crowie, he was just superb as was Alf, the backline won us this one”
