The Rathbone Engineering Bayside Bombers made it 9 from 9 on Saturday night with a resounding 76 point victory over the Hervey Bay Fruitbats at Hervey Bay. The win was a first ever at Hervey Bay in 4 attempts as the Bombers sober trip up was the catalyst in the win.
With a near full strength side boarding the bus and a few travelling lone style, The Bombers gelled together in the trip north to Whale watching territory to arrive at the ground before the bats and were keen to get out and stretch their legs, with the late arrival of Teale Weller and Ada Roberts, who’s sightseeing trip of the Hervey Bay suburbs got them lost, the Bombers were fit, primed and ready to beat the away hoodoo that Hervey Bay holds.
The first quarter started with a frenetic pace and with Russ Bagnall palming off to the evergreen Mick Kath, the Bombers were away with Big Dukes Smith posing one of his three majors for the night. Benny Rogers was everywhere the ball was and with Timmy White and Clint Dunning rebounding the forward thrusts that the bats could muster, the Baysiders had posted 5 goals to one in the first quarter, could the bats winning streak be over at home?
The local side had found some extra talls at the quarter time break and came out fighting as they kicked the first two goals of the quarter to bring the margin back to two goals, but the Bombers persisted through goals to Rocco and Mike Rennie late in the quarter to hold a handy 20 point lead at the main break.
Coach Mike Tait was not happy at the break telling his boys that they needed to lift, swinging Teale Weller onto a half back flank and it was his drive on the left hand wing that kick started the Bombers ride home to victory as they piled on 5 unanswered goals in the third quarter, with Russell Crowe and Steve Hazell rebounding from defence and the evergreen Carlo Archille , who had taken ownership of his wing all year racking up possession after possession, forwards Rennie, Rocco, Brett Knight and Smith completing the job for the scoreboard attendants.
The last stanza was all about pride and savouring this night as another 5 goals to the Bombers turned victory into a compounding win, Big John Hendry took advantage of Bagnall having a well earned spell with some telling ruck work and Ada Roberts in his sweeper roll racking up the clearances, the Bombers home by 76 points. “ We have been coming here for over 5 years, this victory is a sweet one coach Mike Tait said after the game. A fantastic effort from the boys, we will celebrate tonight”
