The Rathbone Engineering Bayside Bombers claimed scalp no 11 last Saturday with a comprehensive 9-12-66 to 2-7-19 win over the Aspley Hornets at Aspley.
The Bombers jumped out of the starters blocks with a huge first quarter but failed to take advantage of another Russel Crowe toss win kicking with the aid of a 3 goal breeze managed to spray them either side of the goal posts. The Bombers ruck division was slightly less in stature due to the loss of Big Sully Bagnall, but Johnny Hendry took all before him in a tussle of strength will the opposition ruckman, but Johnny wore him down by game’s end to take best a field honours.
Once again the on ball brigade of Benny Rogers, Coach Mike Tait playing his last game for the Bombers and small forward Clinton Dunning were racking up possessions as the game turned into a game of defence as Aspley continually pushed players into the Bomber forward zone to congest the play. Bombers up by 25 points at half time
The second quarter loss of Ada Roberts proved that the Bombers could shift their players as Paul Magher and Mick Kath become influential players after half time in new rolls as onballers and wingman. Clinton Dunning was again amongst goal kickers with 3 as was the livewire Geoff Buzwell ( 3. Goals) playing up the ground at centre half forward.
Full credit to Aspley in the way that they shut down the Bomber goal scoring juggernaut that they have been in previous games, but at the cost of not scoring themselves as the defence of Teale Weller and Russell Crowe continually rebounded any forward surges that Aspley could muster.
The Bombers were strong again in victory over a dogged Aspley, but win number 11 was always going to happen as the supremacy that the Bombers have shown does not look like stopping before their last game this weekend.
