We are saddened to report on the passing of Life Member Ian Buchanan.
Ian joined the Noosa Tigers in 1970, the clubs inaugural year, when Weyba Road was just a paperbark swamp. In 1972 after the acquisition of the 4 hectares of land on Weyba Rd Ian, who was then a foreman with the Noosa Shire Council, was instrumental with President Len Daddow and a small band of willing helpers to build the football oval. Trees were felled, using 50 sticks of dynamite supplied by Ian, levels pegged, sand fill from the Noosa River mouth were trucked in on council trucks and the commandeering of a grader over many weekends saw the ground take shape. Len Daddow has said on many occasions that it was Ians’ expertise that ensured that the main oval was, and still is, perfect for Australian football.
Ian was a magnificent volunteer for the Tigers apart from his ground building prowess, working as the groundsman, timekeeper, league delegate and was team manager, trainer and selector for many a Sunshine Coast Rep team.
When asked to describe Ian, a fellow life member said, “Ian was always there to do the work that needed to be done, and he was a gentleman to boot.”
Ian was the second Noosa AFC member to become a life member and was granted Honorary Life Membership of the Noosa Tigers in 1980. He was inducted into the SCAFL Hall of Fame in 2010.
