Last Sunday 1st September the Northern Knights went up against Gippsland Power in a TAC Cup Elimination Final at VISY Park. The atmosphere had a real finals buzz with near perfect weather greeting both teams at the 11:15am kick off. The Knights handled their nerves and started the game the better but were unable to put that advantage on the scoreboard and were wasteful with their entries into the forward 50. The Knights were however, able to post the first two majors on the match through Liam Bowkett with a great running goal and Kyle Langford a nice snap from closer in and lead by nine points at quarter time. The Knights then began to get on top in the second quarter and started using the ball more efficiently going forward. A great intercept goal to Jayden Short was quickly followed by a brilliant goal from Marcus Bontempelli bursting away from a centre clearance. The Power hit back with a couple of goals themselves before sixteen year old Sam Peet calmly slotted one from the boundary. Knightâs captain Jake Kalanj and Jacob Smith also added goals just prior to the main break to allow Northern a 28 point lead at half time. The game tightened up again in the third term with both sides adding a further two goals each and Knights lead had crept to 31 by the final change. The Knights then took control of the match in last with Ben Lennon showing his class up forward with three goals along with singles from Kyle Langford, Jake Kalanj & Josh Turner. Northern eventually ended up running away with 58 point victory their first finals win since 2007. Billy Murphy was instrumental early in the game setting up the victory, while Ben Lennon again showed why he will be highly sought after in the November AFL Draft. Other good performers for the Knights on the day were, Josh Iacobaccio, Josh Turner, Sam Switkowski & Jake Kalanj.
This Sunday 8th September the Northern Knights continue their 2013 finals campaign against the Eastern Ranges again at Visy Park, Carlton. The match begins at 2:00pm and we look forward to playing for a spot in the TAC Cup Preliminary Finals.
