The Northern Knights kicked off our 2014 TAC Cup campaign on Sunday 23rd March at VISY Park against the Oakleigh Chargers. In overcast conditions the Knights got away to a fast start with early goals to Garrett McDonagh & Reece McKenzie. The Chargers started to get back into the contest in general play but squandered opportunities in front of goal. A late goal on the quarter time siren to first gamer Darcy Macpherson gave the Knights a handy 21 point lead at the first change. Oakleigh came out firing in the second quarter and booted the four unanswered goals to take the lead before McKenzie answered for Northern following a strong pack mark. Kyle Langford & Billy Murphy also added late goals for the Knights to give us a 13 point Half Time lead. Oakleigh then really stepped up a notch in the third quarter kicking six goals to Northern’s nil to take a 26 point lead into the Final Quarter. It was a more evenly fought contest in the last with Oakleigh outscoring the Knights four goals to three and win by 34 points. 19yr Olds Liam Hunt and Jordan Perry were strong contributors for the Knights in the midfield while key Defenders Bailey Jordan & Ryan Tester both battled hard throughout the four quarters on debut. Kyle Langford provided a good focal point for the Knights going forward and Vice Captain Sam Switkowski was another solid contributor.
