Berwick Leader

JOSH Battle appears headed for the top. But in which sport?
The 17-year-old is in elite squads in cricket and football, and may soon have to have to choose one and ditch the other.
A fine batsman, Battle was captain of Southern Pioneers U18s last season and has been invited to try out for the Vic U17s this year.
But it could be that a Sherrin will be his focus. Last week, Battle, of Berwick, was named in the level two AFL Academy, marking him out as one of the most likely youngsters in the country.
A key forward, Battle is a “bottom-ager’’ with the Dandenong Stingrays this season but quickly made an eyepopping impression when he kicked five goals in Round 3. “He is a key position forward, marks the footy well,’’ Stingrays coach Craig Black said. “He’s got good hands.’’
As a member of the squad of 30 players, Battle will take part in the eight-month program under head coach Brenton Sanderson.
Berwick 16-year-old Oscar Clavarino was named in the level one AFL Academy squad after impressing for Victoria in the under 16 national championships. Recruiters says the 194cm Clavarino moves like a flanker, is clean on the ground and competes well in the air.
