Our Colts Coaches Harmit Singh (player/coach of Northcote Park) and Doug Morris (Lower Plenty) competed against one another last Saturday 9/5/2015.
Our Colts players were in attendance to see the game.
The Club wishes to thank Sam Botoulas and the Northcote Park FC for their hospitality given to our Colts players & their families.
It was another eventful day down at Bill Lawry Oval on Saturday, as Northcote Park hosted Lower Plenty.
Not only was it a match up of two teams sitting in the top 5 of the NFL ladder, but to those involved in the Preston Bullants Football Club, especially the Colts, it was a match up of two individuals.
Harmit Singh (player/coach of Northcote Park) and Doug Morris (Lower Plenty) are both involved in the Preston Bullants Colts’ sides. Morris coaches Colts 1, and Singh, Colts 2.
It’s the first time Morris and Singh have been opponents, as this is Singh’s first season as a Northcote Park player. Funnily enough, Doug Morris was actually a Northcote Park player up until this season, so it’s their first time crossing paths on the field against each other.
It was a big moment for those involved with the Bullants, and it was fantastic to see around 20 players from the Colts sides come down and support their coaches for this big game.
When the game got underway, the home side started the much better team. However, inaccurate kicking from the Cougars kept the pressure off the Bears. At one stage, Northcote Park were 1.6, but really should have already been five goals ahead.
It didn’t get much better before quarter time, as Northcote Park took a 13 point lead (3.7 to 2.0) into the break.
It was at this stage that Collingwood forward Jamie Elliott joined me in the grandstand with injured Northcote Park and Collingwood VFL listed player Ash Close.
I had seen Elliott at least twice this season, and was beginning to wonder if others didn’t recognise him, as I hadn’t seen him sign a single autograph thus far, but that was all about to change.
As he was sitting a couple rows behind me, all I could here for the entire second quarter was four little kids all trying to talk to Elliott at once, and Jamie trying to juggle four conversations to not disappoint anyone, something he was actually pretty skilled at. I don’t know how he did it.
Back on the ground, the Cougars had really started to put the foot down. A dominant six goal to three quarter saw Northcote Park lead by 25 at half time. The margin wasn’t reflective of the game however, as the Cougars forward pressure and ball use in the middle was too good for Lower Plenty, who were struggling to stay in the game.
Both sides came out after half time looking dangerous, as this was easily the best quarter for the Bears all day. They restricted the home side to just two goals, and kicked two of their own to keep themselves within striking distance of the Cougars.
Unfortunately for Lower Plenty, that was were it ended.
Northcote Park absolutely dominated the final term, slamming on eight goals to zero. 11 different players had goals to their name in the 84 point rout of the Bears, with Koden Colman (4), Julian Violato (3), and Will Debruin, Mitch Papas and Brock McLennan (2) leading the way.
It was another impressive day for the Northcote Park under 19’s and reserves, as both sides got the four points as well. Special mention to the under 19’s who inflicted the first loss on Lower Plenty for the season.
Next week, Nothcote Park travel to North Heidelberg to see if they can make it three wins in a row.
