The Ottawa Swans are thrilled to introduce the Carleton Warriors and Rideau Shamrocks to the AFL Quebec (AFLQ) women's competition in 2015. These two teams of Ottawa-based players will participate in AFLQ's 9-aside women's league, and will combine forces as the Swans for three 18-aside games versus the Montreal Angels throughout the summer.
Joining the AFLQ competition will give Ottawa-based female players more opportunities for participation, increases the number of home games throughout the season and reduces travel time to and from away games. The move will greatly enhance accessibility for women's football in the Ottawa region, and support a growing community of female footballers in eastern Ontario and Quebec.
"This season with AFLQ is going to be great for the development of individual players and the Swans club as a whole," said Emma Dickinson, Warriors Head Coach."AFLQ is a great organization that has put a lot of emphasis on supporting and promoting women's football in Canada and we're excited to join them and build on our strong existing relationship."
The two teams were selected by a draft last week, and announced at the Jersey Presentation Night on May 21st at the Swans' sponsor bar, St. Louis Bar and Grill. "We've selected two really well-rounded teams," said Chris Lockhart, Shamrocks Head Coach. "We're confident that our Ottawa-based teams will be providing some tough competition this year, and we're all looking forward to the start of the regular season this weekend."
The formation of these two teams is the result of hard work from the Lady Swans coaching staff, the Swans commission and AFLQ. The Ottawa Swans would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the following donors:
- Brett Connors, Assistant Coach of the Northern Lights Team Canada, and Adam Skrobolak of Teamworks Performance for the generous donation of 15 Warriors jerseys to the Carleton Warriors.
- Simone Faulkner and the UTS Shamrocks for the generous donation of 15 Shamrocks jerseys to the Rideau Shamrocks. The Ottawa Swans and UTS Shamrocks are also hoping to establish a club sisterhood and player exchange program for future seasons.
This move would not have been possible without the generosity of our supporters.
Games will take place at the Rideau Carleton Raceway in Ottawa, and at Vanier College in Montreal. The first games of the season are this Sunday, May 31st at Vanier College and will see the Rideau Shamrocks take on the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Giants at 2pm and the Carleton Warriors match up against the Plateau Eagles at 3:30pm.
Good luck to the Warriors and Shamrocks and all the best for a great inaugural season!
